Philosophy

I view the job of he Technical Director as the person who brings the Scenic Designer’s image to life.  The Technical Director does not create images from metaphor as a Scenic Designer does, but has to have input in that process in order to create the finished piece; that is the artistic role for the TD.  I have a multitude of tools at my disposal to attain this goal.  Choosing the right one, and teaching my students to do so, is the core of my job.  I am responsible for all aspects of our program that relate to scenic construction; teaching basic & advanced construction skills, computer skills and how the Technical Director contributes to each production as an artist, always focusing on safety along the way.

The art of technical direction is to tranform imagination into reality. Technology is pushing its way into the world of art, and we can either choose to embrace it or hope that it is a trend and will go away.  I choose to embrace technology because I think it provides theatre with new means of expression.  At the simplest level, computers allow for the efficient and easy manipulation and presentation of images, text, and ideas.  The impact that technology may have in the future is something that we must be prepared for; as an artistic tool I believe we are only now scratching the surface of what will come.  In order for students to compete in a future work force, I must lay the ground work for technological skill development that will make them competitive.
